How do they find out if a train’s track is damaged? When is it changed, know interesting fact

We all have traveled by train, but have we ever seen the railway tracks changing? Mostly railway tracks are changed only when an accident occurs. A crack appears in the railway track. Or the railway track gets uprooted or broken. The rest of the track remains the same. The same railway track continues to operate for many decades; It cannot be changed. In such a situation, a question was asked on the social media platform Quora that when is a train track considered bad? How do we find out that a train’s track is damaged and needs to be replaced? An expert has answered this.

Animesh Kumar Sinha, who calls himself Chief Engineer in Railways Indian Railway Answered this with facts. He told that the age of the railway track depends on the load i.e. weight falling on it. It is measured in GMT i.e. Gross Million Tonnes. Whatever railway tracks are laid nowadays, their age is 1 billion GMT. If you are not able to understand the meaning of one billion GMT, then understand it like this. This age is equal to the movement of 2 lakh goods trains or the movement of 10 lakh express trains.

So the railway track will not deteriorate for 54 years
To understand it simply, a track through which 2 lakh goods trains or 10 lakh express trains have passed is considered worthy of repair or replacement. Now you can see it in this way that if 50 express trains pass through a railway track in one direction every day, then in 54 years the track will be worth changing. If along with 50 expresses, 10 goods trains also leave from one direction every day, then the railway track will not get damaged for 27 years. This means that only after this the need for repair will be felt.

Engineers measure the wear of railway tracks
Now you must be wondering how it is finally decided that the track has been damaged? Actually, for this, regular checking is done and wear etc. of the railway track is measured. If the wear is 8 -13 mm from top to bottom, then the track is replaced immediately. Apart from this, Track Recording Car (TRC) is run regularly. The instruments installed in it immediately measure any disturbance in the track and give signals. After this the engineers check it and start the replacement process.
